Freelancing is the new office. Whether you like it or not, freelancing is rapidly taking over as a career path. We have number to prove it too, over 54 MILLION Americans are now doing freelance work according to a new study conducted by the independent research firm Edelman Berland.
This is a huge percentage of the working population in America. Freelancing is big, its here to stay and it’s only becoming more popular. 60% of American freelancers did so by choice. This highlights the changing working landscape in the US. People are ditching their “safe” desk jobs in favour of more flexible, geographically neutral solutions.
The majority of freelancers who left their day job are earning more money and in many cases this is for doing the same thing. Freelancing can be a fairly lucrative endeavour, having personally worked with some freelancers who are doing well into the six figures every year.
This paints a beautiful picture for any aspiring freelancer, but is it really easy pickings to become a successful one?
The answer to that is a resounding no. Just like anything else, achieving great results requires great effort and nothing comes easy. Many people think that freelancing involves sitting at home and waiting for the work to come to you. This is definitely not the case. You have to hustle for the work. You’re in competition with all the other freelancers in your niche so you have to be on your game if you really want to be successful.
How To Start Freelancing Immeditely:
The key to starting your freelancing career is references and experience. Contact all the people you know and advise them that you’re getting into freelancing. You’ll be surprised how far networking can take you. It will allow you to build up that initial client base and get some reference experience in the field. If you do a great job you’ll also have social proof in the form of positive reviews when you decide to create profiles on all the major freelancing networks.
The second crucial step to becoming successful with freelancing is to sell yourself and your services effectively. You are your brand! So how you come across and conduct your services are reflective of your reputation and your business. Having a personality that people can gel with is also really important.

Number three is to write a plan of action. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail” its a popular saying because it damn right true. You need to plan out exactly what you’ll be doing as soon as you take the leap, so you don’t waste any time thinking or deciding what to do with yourself.
It’s also a good idea to create a financial plan, outlining your requirements, goals and work you’ll need to obtain to reach those goals.
